The coming of spring?
With the coming of spring brought rather abruptly into question, we got to thinking of the assets one needs to survive a winter in a small Rocky Mountain community. Your own northern sentinel is pretty handy. Here Scout surveys Duncan Lake looking north towards Revelstoke. For many long time Howser residents, this is the first time they can remember this huge reservoir of the Kootenay Hydro programme freezing (completed in 1967 as first dam of the Columbia River Treaty, draining 2400sq/km and holding 1.7cubic km of water). A cosy batbox resolves tenancy issues and assists in mosquito control but without doubt, great friends and neighbours are essential. With a snow day here yesterday and the road out closed to avalanche, it's all paws and myriad sliding objects to the hills. Weather due to change this week and all this white will start to make the journey into the rivers!
